"Diamonds Are a 'Cats Best Friend"
by: Soren Hansen

Easter is upon us and its time to go looking for eggs.  This year toddlers and tikes aren’t the only one’s that like eggs either.  Our women’s softball team loves eggs, goose eggs, that is, and if you don’t believe me check out some of their weekend box scores.

The Cats returned home from what coach Candrea described as the most difficult road trip of the season winning 2 of 3.  Staff ace Taryne Mowatt was phenomenal this weekend giving up just four runs the entire weekend.  Against No. 16 UW on Friday the ‘Cats left town after an easy 6-0 victory in which the ‘Cats were so dominant that I’m not sure a runner reached second base on Mowatt the whole game.  Which isn’t too surprising because I don’t think it’s easy for anyone to get to “second base” on her, not that I’m speaking from experience or anything.  Then, after beating the Huskies they headed down to Westwood where our No. 5 ‘Cats were set to take on No. 14 UCLA and speaking of numbers, they actually had our number as of late winning the last 7 meetings.  Looking to end the streak Mowatt gave up just three hits against the Bruins.  Unfortunately one of those hits fell for a 2-run homer as UCLA took the first game 2-0 when the ‘Cats put up, well call it goose egg, a bagel (it was Passover this week too, Shabbat Shalom to all our Jewish readers), a doughnut (Srgt. Mejia) whatever you want to call it is fine by me but there’s no other way to describe the loss other than frustrating.  Things were looking grim on Sunday as well when we were again trailing 2-0 after 4 innings but the ‘Cats turned it on to score 5 in the 5th and an additional 3 in both the 6th and 7th for the 11-2 victory.  The team will be home this weekend as we host bitter rival ASU tonight, tomorrow, and Sunday.  So if you’re looking for something to do or just love girls in visors come on out to cheer on the squad.

I don’t know about any of you but when I think of Easter I just think of spring, and it reminds me of another tradition for this time of year, Spring Cleaning.  Well the baseball team and I are on the same page as they SWEPT the three game home stand against defending national champs OSU over the weekend.  The Beavers hadn’t lost a series in nearly a year and hadn’t been swept in close to three but that didn’t stop us from sending them home 0-3 in the conference with their tales between their legs.  Anytime you can give it to a beaver every night of the weekend, it’s a good weekend.  With the sweep we finally got some much deserved respect from the polls entering the top 25 at No. 17.  The Cal Bears came into town last night and the game lasted until the wee hours of the night, and like Lionel Richie so does OSW.  Starter Preston Guilmet went 9 shutout innings only to be matched by Cal starter Tyson Ross who threw eight scoreless frames.  With two outs in the bottom of the 11th Brad Glenn drove in the winning run giving the ‘Cats the 1-0 victory in the series opener.  The ‘Cats have now reeled off 11 wins in a row so come out to Sancet tonight get yourself some peanuts and crackerjacks and watch the team go for twelve.

With all of that said, if you’re not cooking the Easter Ham, eating leftover Gifelta fish, are rummaging through Mr. MacGregors Garden come check out our diamond, baseball diamond.  As always be sure to check back in next week for scores as results.

Happy Easter & Hootie Hoo
