Obscure Sports Weekly

by: Soren Hansen

On the outside looking in, that was the feeling in McKale Center as the Gymcats fell just short of qualifying for the NCAA Championships last weekend.  Oregon State edged out the ‘Cats by .05 for the second qualifying spot and for the second year in a row the ‘Cats have posted the top score for a team not qualifying.  Both senior Jamie Holton and sophomore Bree Workman went out of bounds on a tumbling pass, resulting in a 0.100 deduction from each score.  We had better scores on 3 of the 4 events over OSU but those mishaps on the floor proved costly.  What really hurts is that U of A had a better qualifying score than UCLA which won their regional.

As my colleague Barrett alluded to the other day hopes are high as the baseball team is off to an incredible start and behind the pitching dominance of Preston Guilmet and Brad Mills the team has been pretty much unbeatable on Friday and Saturday night.  The ‘Cats took the first two against Stanford last weekend 8-1 and 15-1 to extend their winning streak to 16 games.  Unfortunately the streak came to an end on Sun as the ‘Cats dropped the weekend finale. The No. 12 baseball team is tied for first in the conference and heads up to Pullman this weekend to take on WSU (17-17, 1-8 Pac-10).  The team is ready to put Sunday’s loss behind them and start a new streak.  Oh and to answer Barrett’s debate Louis Holmes would be best on Lute’s squad.  Could you imagine anyone stepping into the lane to try and take a charge.  If his size wasn’t intimidating enough he’s always got some crazy dew, note to Brett Brielmeier, find out who Holmes’ barber is and go there, your 5th grade buzz cut isn’t striking fear in anyone.

After a weekend sweep of the bay area schools the softball team suffered a tough loss last night at ASU.  The ‘Cats were held to just 2 hits by ASU ace Burkhart and after scoring three in the first inning, they didn’t have another base runner until the seventh following a HBP.  It’s never easy losing to ASU but the ‘Cats host the Oregon schools this weekend so there’s no time to sulk.  The subplot of the weekend will be the sibling rivalry playing out right before your eyes as centerfielder Caitlin Lowe’s sister Paige is second basemen for OSU.  Tonight’s game features two of the best pitchers in the country in Mowatt (1.68 ERA) and OSU’s McGowan (1.54 ERA).  If the pitching disappoints lets just hope the two sisters break into a quarrel at second base arguing about who never returned the others blouse.

OSW Athlete of the Week
This week the title goes to Preston Guilmet.  The sophomore starter pitched a complete game allowing just one run on five hits while striking out a career high 15 last Friday against Stanford.  He earned his second Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honor of the season from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.  He’s the first U of A player ever to take this honor twice.  Sources have indicated that while he’s honored to be the National Player of the Week for the second time he had been disappointed that the illustrious OSW Athlete of the Week title had eluded him.  Well worry no more Preston as you take this week’s title.

As always check back in next week for scores and highlights and for those of you in Tucson this weekend try to make it out to support the ‘Cats.
