Arizona is a Title 9 Townby: Soren Hansen
Spring Break is here and its time to get wild, wild on the cats. Me esteemed colleague Barrett wrote an article on Jan 11, arguing that Tucson, Arizona is a, dare I say football town? After yesterday's game we certainly don't look like a basketball town, but is it fair to say that any of our men's sports are the talk of the town? There's a lot of criticism surrounding Title 9, just don't mention that to anyone in the Old Pueblo.
The women's swim team won its second straight Pac-10 title February 17th and started gunning for their first ever National Championship Wednesday. The last three years we've finished 3rd, and I think its time we made the move up to that top spot. During the Pac-10 Championships we sat in 8th place after the first night due to a disqualification during one of the relays but like cream, we rose to the top. A second straight Pac-10 title is nice, but the NCAA Championships started Wednesday night in Minneapolis, MN and the 'Cats made quite a splash opening night, leaving everyone in their wake. The Cats are leading the chase for the title by 13 points over Auburn after their historic opening night. The 200 free relay team defended its title while setting a new American record time of 1:27.23. The competition is close but if we continue to swim the way we are, please be sure to check back in next week to find out when the parade is, we just might be extending championship drive.
Speaking of Championship drive, if anyone has taken a stroll down that beloved drive lately you may have realized the U of A Softball team is defending its title this year. The 'Cats had an early stumble but have battled some recent injuries to move into the No. 2 spot nationally. The 'Cats will make their first true road trip of the year when they head to Waco, TX tonight to take on the No. 14 Baylor Bears. For those of you still looking for something to do for spring break, pile into the car and head on out to support the 'Cats. Just don't drink the Cool-Aid, and Tuitama, just don't drink anything.
While some might suggest that Title 9 is hurting our athletic program, the Lax-Cats and Ice-Cats have been forced to be club teams. Would there be such a demand for the Ice-Cats if you couldn't buy beer at the game? So say what you will, it definitely hasn't hurt the U of A and word around the water cooler is that some local big wigs are going to be opening a lesbian bar in honor of their success. So for those of you in the neighborhood assoc around Fourth Ave, don't go denying the Cat's Meow’s liquor license. Raur Raur.
Well now that I've given you all a couple a spring break suggestions don't go finding yourself in some Sasha Baron Cohen movie.
Hootie Hoo & High Five!!
