Obscure Sports Weekly

by: Soren Hansen

While the LA schools rained on our basketball teams' parade and swept us at home in the words of The Temptations:

I've got sunshine on a cloudy day. When it's cold outside, I've got the month of May. Well, I guess you'll say what can make me feel this way? My girl. (My girl, my girl) Talkin' 'bout my girl. (My girl)

So for your sunshine lets check in on our girls in and see how they're doing in some of our lesser publicized sports in this week's edition of Obscure Sports Weekly.

Since we last checked in the Gymcats were headed up to the Emerald city for a heated battle with Pac-10 foe Washington. The Cats mopped the "floor" and all the other routines with the Huskies and cruised to an easy win. Last Friday, the 'Cats came back to McKale looking to upset No. 3 Stanford. Prior to the meet all I wanted to know was. "If a tree falls in McKale with the Zona Zoo go crazy?" Unfortunately I guess I'll never know as our upset hopes were squashed as we fell, not literally, 196.400 to 195.375. This week however, ASU comes to town so tonight's matchup is sure to be intense. The UAPD has hired extra security after two women were struck by "rhythmic ribbons" last year. So for those of you that don't have a date for tonight, Barrett, come on out to support the Gymcats and for those of you that are too scared to come out and watch www.arizonaathletics.com will have live feed online of the event.

The Gymcats aren't the only ladies that will be seeing action at home this weekend the No. 4 Softball team hosts No. 2 Texas A&M. The Cats started off the season in a little bit of a slump with the preseason favorite going just 4-2 in the Kajikawa Classic Feb. 11, including a walk-off loss to Texas A&M. With the memory of that loss fresh on our minds and having won six straight since the tournament I think it's safe to say we're ready. UA shortstop Kristie Fox is definitely ready to take the field and here's what she had to say about this weekends series.

"We don't like to lose to anyone, and we have the opportunity now to make a statement to (A&M) because we have three games and we definitely want to come out and beat them all three games and show that that one game was just a fluke,"

Kristie's not only "Foxy" she's feisty. Raur Raur.

Speaking of people that shave their legs the Men's swimming and diving team has been up in Seattle competing for in Pac-10 Championships since last Wed. Through last nights competition the Wildcats (6-3, 3-2) are currently in third place with 217 points trailing No. 2 Stanford, which has won the conference meet 24 consecutive years, and No. 4 California. While you may be concerned we're trailing to a couple of national powers it hasn't fazed head coach Frank Busch in the least.

"As a whole, this is probably the best start for men's Pac-10's we've ever had," said Busch.

I couldn't say it any better than Lynard Skynyrd and I'm sure Stanford's "Shaking like a leaf on a tree," as the Cats look to end the Cardinal's run and finish up strong.

Obscure Sports Athlete of the Week

That's right everyone we're rolling out a new segment and this week's "runaway winner"...Antoine Cason. Cason the Cats' top CB last year has joined the track team. After a three year break to learn the Stoops' system Cason has been allowed to return to another sport he thrives in track. Cason and the rest of the track and field teams will compete in their first officially scored meet today and tomorrow at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Championships in Seattle. So Antoine for furthering my efforts and bringing more attention to our less popular sports you're the inaugural winner of the OSW Athlete of the week.

Be sure to check back in next week for scores and highlights and always keep reading cause as my man Stephen Root says in Dodgeball,

"I read it for the chicks."
