Obscure Sports Weekly
by: Soren Hansen
While our basketball team was a little disappointing last night I’ve
got just the thing to brighten you day. That’s right with it being
Friday its time for the second edition of Obscure Sports Weekly.
I would first like to acknowledge all of the support I got after week one. One reader sent me an email that said:
“This was the best thing to happen to Fridays since I learned how to do ’The Urkel ‘ ”
Well my friend this one’s for you:
“If you want to do the Steve Urkel dance, all you have to do is
hitch up your pants, bend your knees, and stick out your pelvis; (I’m
telling you, baby, it’s better than Elvis!) ”.
As a side note, my colleague Barrett and I performed this
wonderful dance one night at Maloney’s, the local Tucson watering hole,
with unbelievable results. In fact I believe he managed to get this
lovely lassie’s telephone number on a baggage claim ticket. While he
didn’t steal her “saddlebags, ” he definitely stole her heart.
Speaking of results lets take a look at how some of our lesser known
athletes performed last week. The Men’s and Women’s swimming and diving
teams both suffered tough losses last week as both lost to Stanford
Friday and the women fell short again losing to Cal on Sunday. Though
the losses were tough to take, this isn’t a team that’s going to tread
water, so look for them to get off the blocks quickly. As mentioned in
last week’s edition the weather forecast was less than accommodating
for swimming as the wind and un-Tucson like 40 degree temperature was
definitely a factor. Coach Frank Busch had this to say:
“You’re not only battling the other team, but you’re battling
trying to stay warm, ” he said. “That’s just something that we won’t
have to worry about this weekend, so that in itself will make a big
difference in how the kids perform, I’m sure. ”
As Coach Busch mentioned, neither squad will have to deal with
the elements this week as they’ll be swimming indoors at the Lee and
Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin as we take on the No. 1
Texas men and No. 12 women tonight at 6 p.m. Don’t be intimidated by
their rankings though Arizona competed in the aforementioned center
earlier this year with spectacular results they had 27 NCAA
automatic-qualifying times and eight new school records while
dominating the Texas Invitational.
The men’s team is 1-7 in their history against Texas and since
“one is the loneliest number ” and while Three Dog Night will tell you
“two can be as bad as one ” they couldn’t be farther from the truth in
this case and Arizona should come out on top.
Enough bad news though, there was one team that didn’t take a
“plunge ” last week, the Gymcats. They defeated Michigan State in a
close come from behind battle to “Keep rollin’ rollin’ rollin’ rollin’
” I’m sorry I couldn’t go two weeks without a Fred Durst quote. And you
thought he was dead. This week the No. 8 Gymcats will also be out in
Westwood taking on UCLA Sun at 3pm pst. It’s going to a tough battle
though as this
UCLA team boasts several elite gymnasts, including sophomore Kristina
Comforte - the second highest ranked freshman in the nation in the
all-around in 2006 - and junior Tasha Schwikert, a member of the 2000
U.S. Olympic team and current Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week.
The Cats aren’t intimidated though by former Olympians, Arizona freshman Brittney Morgan had this to say:
“We’re all at the same level now, ” she said. “They were Olympians, but now they’re just like me and everyone else. ”
It’s going to take more than a former Olympian to knock us off
our high horse, or pummel for that matter. I’ve got the Cats by a
landslide.
Be sure to check out next week’s edition for more exciting news
and with the Men’s Tennis team set to start their season Saturday at
Robson Tennis Center. Keep your eyes peeled for our Insider report from
Hunter Van Buren. As he gives you all the ins, outs, and lets of this
year’s squad.
